San Jose Pottery Tile Colonial Couple Dancing

$ 350.00

A vintage 1930's tile from the San Jose Mission Pottery of San Antonio Texas. From the company's Pan American ware line it shows a hand decorated design of a dancing couple in colonial dress. The tile measures 6" square and is in very good condition with some flaking of the glaze along the top edge and corners.

According to Susan Frost in the book Colors on Clay, The San Jose Tile Workshops of San Antonio, for a short period in the 1930s the San Jose Potteries produced a catalog of "Pan American Ware." Pan American countries were of high public interest, culminating in the Greater Texas and Pan American Exhibition in Dallas in 1937. The founder Ethel Harris stated in the catalog the line included "Mexican, Southern, Western, Indian, and Colonial designs to appeal to all tastes and parts of the country."
