Sächsische Ofen- und Wandplatten-Werke (SOMAG) Meissen
Northwind Screaming Man Tile S.O.M.AG Meissen
$ 495.00
A superb design in low relief of a screaming face. The tile measures 6 inches square. Made at Sächsische Ofen- und Wandplatten-Werke (SOMAG) in Meissen Germany around 1900. A light caramel colored majolica glaze covers the surface and pools a little in the recesses to accentuate the features. Never installed, the back is clean and displays a clear mark for the company. It is in excellent condition with one tiny nick on the top edge near the 2 stilt marks.
This mythological grotesque Norse-like figure is depicting the wind god Aeolus a common design element that was popularized in the 19th and early 20th century and often represents the change of seasons.
An uncommon find for a serious collector.
