Trent Tile, Monk With a Flower

$ 65.00
This antique tile from the Trent Tile Company of Trenton New Jersey shows a monk sniffing the flower of a potted carnation. It measures 6" square and 1/2" thick. The monk's image is most likely a transfer, but you can see portions have been hand painted. The ombre background has been hand painted.The carnation means fascination, distinction, and love. The tile remains in excellent condition.

The Arts and Crafts era was awash with happy monks. Their images could be found on tiles, plaques, chargers, tankard sets, etc. They would be happily drinking ale, reading books, illuminating manuscripts, or presenting meals. According to a Christian legend, carnations grew from the Virgin Mary's tears as she watched Jesus carry the cross. This is how they became associated with motherly love.
