Gertrude Barrer Tile Panel in Frame

This vintage tile panel by Gertrude Barrer-Russell (1921-1992) shows a young male and female couple standing side by side in a landscape, Made in the Abstract Expressionist style each tile measures 6" square. Great colors and gold accents, almost like  Klimt painting. It is housed in its original simple wooden frame.  Measures about 12 1/2" square. The tiles are in excellent condition. There is wear and some dents to the frame. The wooden backing has a deep patina of age. Probably a one of a kind hand made piece. Dates to the early 1950's, a true Mid Century Modern gem.

Gertrude Barrer was born in 1921 in New York City and studied at the Art Student's League from 1939-1942/43 and at the University of Iowa. She has been increasingly credited by art historians over the past 20 years as having been a leading contributor to American Modern Art. She and her husband, artist, Frank Russell, moved to Roxbury CT in 1959, and collaborated on such projects as ceramics, murals, illustrations, sculpture and prints. She was a co-founder and art editor of Iconograph, an avant-garde art/literary magazine that was influential to both the Abstract Expressionist movement and the Indian Space movement. The artist was also an active member of SPIRAL, an association of American Abstract painters who exhibited together throughout the 1950s and 60s.
