American Encaustic

AETCO Scenic Portrait Tile by Franz Frenzel Woman Behind a Rock

$ 225.00
An antique American tile c. 1885 designed by Franz J Frenzel for the American Encaustic Tile Company of Zanesville Ohio made in an emaux ombrants process, which renders the image nearly photographic. This scenic image is covered in a blue glaze and shows a woman hiding behind a boulder on a cliff looking down at a sailboat. The detail is exquisite. The tile measures 6" square. The mold is crisp and is uncrazed. It is housed in a mahogany colored wood frame. Overall the framed tile measures 8" square and 3/4" deep. An excellent example.

Emaux Ombrants is the art or process of flooding transparent colored glaze over a stamped or intaglio molded design to a level with the surface. The different thicknesses of glaze produce the lights and shades of the picture. Unlike relief molded tiles the surface of the finished tile is flat.
