A wonderful Arts and Crafts era tile by Porcelyne de Fles otherwise known as Royal Delft. Designed in cuenca, or raised line, with crystalline matte glazes this tile features a dragonfly. This is refereed to as a brick tile as it was designed to be installed. Measures 4 1/8" square, and 1/2" thick. This is one of the animal tiles designed by L.E.F Bodart (1888-1933) in the 1910's. Unsigned. The tile has a shallow chip on the left edge.
Although Dutch, these tiles were often sold in the USA by the Pardee Tile Company of Perth Amboy, NJ in the 1920's, along with their stock of Grueby tiles.
