Johann von Schwarz
Carl Luber for Johann von Schwarz German Art Nouveau Woman
This beautiful Art Nouveau tile was designed by Carl Sigmund Luber for Johann von Schwarz. It depicts a beautiful woman in an Art Nouveau hairstyle admiring her necklace and locket in the reflection of her hand held mirror. The tile is 6 1/2" tall and 11" long. Luber was employed by Johann von Schwarz 1896-1906 and personally painted the faces of each woman on his ceramics. A similar example can be found in the book Carl Sigmund Luber by Wolfgang Konig on page 94, as shown in the last photo. The tile has a carved spot in the back where a wire can be inserted to hang on the wall. It has impressed and painted marks. The surface is shiny and unworn. There are some flakes around the edges, the largest near her armpit. These would be hidden if framed.
