Continental Faience & Tile Co. Bookends "Solitude"
A pair of bookends by the Continental Faience and Tile Company of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1925-1943). Made from a faience clay, they are formed into a Gothic arch with two robed monks, one holding a book, the other seated and reading. The base is marked "Solitude". Each measures 6" tall. 4" wide and about 2" deep. The dark metallic lustre glaze is in very good condition.There is one colored in flake on the edge of one, They are unmarked but a similar example is pictured on p.123 of "American Art Tile" by Norman Karlson, as shown in the last photo.
