Dunsmore Tile by Polly Brace Kookaburra Bird

$ 65.00
An Art Deco era tile by Polly Brace for Dunsmore on a Woolliscroft blank. Hand painted stenciled design of a Kookaburra bird.  Measures 6" x 6" x 1/2". Small flakes around edge.

Two young women Polly Brace and Kathleen Pillsbury, who were students at the Central School of Art, set up their own business hand painting tiles in about 1925 or 1926. Both were responsible for the design and production of the tiles using blanks supplied by different manufactures. After about 1932 they seem to have used blanks which were speciially prepared for them by Minton.
By the 1950s the firm was being run by Polly Brace and Gwyneth Fisher but they were unable to compete with mass-produced tiles being made by large manufacturers and closed in 1964. (Chris Blanchett, 20th Century Decorative British Tiles)
