Early Grueby Pottery Tile Fireplace Surround Fragment Dreamworld Scituate MA
$ 1,100.00
Rare one of a kind tile by Grueby Pottery from the estate of Thomas Lawson's Dreamworld in Scituate Massachusetts. Designed by Vesper Lincoln George (1865-1934) and installed in 1902, this is the lower right piece of the surround. Pictured in The Brickbuilder, Oct 1902 (see last picture) the tile displays a rolly polly doll, a horse pull toy, a ball of yarn and building blocks spelling out the name LAWSON. Just like toys scattered under a Christmas tree. It measures 20" tall, about 7 1/4" wide and 1" thick. Early white clay is impressed with a 5 on the back. Professional restoration to crack.
Dreamworld was a vast estate built by the copper magnate Thomas Lawson. The interior of the manor house was destroyed and turned into condos in the 1980s.
