Hydrangea Tile by Sherwin & Cotton

A pretty hydrangea tile in the Emaux Obrants style by Sherwin Cotton. George Cartlidge at Sherwin and Cotton perfected the Emaux Obrants process where an image is pressed into the tile, a single color glaze is applied, and the nearly photographic image is given its character by the glaze pooling and thinning over the surfaces. It measures 6" square and 3/8" thick. The back is marked "Sherwin Cotton England". The surface is unworn. There are a few flakes around the edges and traces of mortar on the back.
