Marblehead Pottery Tile Sailor's Coiled Rope

$ 450.00
From the famed Marblehead Pottery this large 6 1/2" square tile has a deeply impressed design of a coiled rope. Glazed in red with black undertones to the high points, the tile is made from a heavy faience clay, making the tile 3/4" thick. It has a clear impressed ship mark on the back for  Marblehead Pottery and apparent artist's initials and date of "CCR 18". It remains in excellent original condition.

The coiled rope is a fitting design element for the coastal town of Marblehead Massachusetts. The town is referred to as the birthplace of the American navy and has an important history in commercial fishing and yachting. The Marblehead pottery was founded in 1904 as a therapy for sanitarium patients. It soon became professionalized and worked as a business until its closing in 1936.
