American Encaustic
Pair of Antique Portrait Tiles by AETCO
$ 225.00
This pair of antique tiles were made by the American Encaustic Tile Company of Zanesville, Ohio at the end of the 19th Century. The tiles show portraits of a couple from the Middle Ages, the man in a ruffled collar and the woman in starched lace and pearls in her hair. Each tile measures 6" square and 1/2" thick and is covered in a mottled glaze meant to mimic marble. These tiles once graced the corners of a fireplace surround so there are remnants of mortar and some scattered flakes but the surfaces remain bright and shiny. This couple has been looking at each other for over 125 years. It must be true love.
