San Jose Pottery Tile Cowboy With Rifle on Horse Hunting American Buffalo Bison
A vintage 1930's tile from the San Jose Mission Pottery of San Antonio Texas. It shows a hand decorated design of a cowboy with a rifle riding his horse hunting a bison or American Buffalo. Good detail of a skilled artisan and bright coloring. Measures 6" square. Slight roughness on edge and some spots of wear to the glaze, only noticeable when viewed at an angle. The back is covered with fabric.
According to Susan Frost in the book Colors on Clay, The San Jose Tile Workshops of San Antonio, for a short period in the 1930s the San Jose Potteries produced a catalog of "Pan American Ware." Pan American countries were of high public interest, culminating in the Greater Texas and Pan American Exhibition in Dallas in 1937. The founder Ethel Harris stated in the catalog the line included "Mexican, Southern, Western, Indian, and Colonial designs to appeal to all tastes and parts of the country."
Who doesn't want to be a cowboy at some time in your life? Great gift. Giddyup.
