Sherwin & Cotton Tile Portrait of Abraham Lincoln

A large tile by Sherwin & Cotton (1877-1930) showing a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. It measures 9" tall and 6" wide and was made at the Eastwood Tile Works in Hanley Staffordshire England. Great impressed marking on the back " In Commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary celebration of the birth of Abraham Lincoln February 12, 1909. Modelled from the only untouched negative in the United States taken 1864. Made at Sherwood & Cotton Eastwood Tile Works Hanley Staffordshire. Robinson & Randle Inc sole agents 1123 Broadway New York City." Excellent original condition with sparse crazing and a small nick on the top edge.

The famous photographic image on this tile was taken Nov. 8, 1863, in Alexander Gardner's Washington, D.C., studio. Sherwin & Cotton was given permission to make Lincoln tiles in 1909.

Sherwin & Cotton was famous for its emaux ombrants style of tiles, where the process of using a single color glaze to pool and thin over the impressed design produced and almost photographic effect.
