Tunisian California Arts and Crafts Tile Kallal el Kadine Nabeul
Antique tile made in Tunisia in the early 20th Century with a Moorish design. Measures 4 3/4" square and 5/8" thick. Truly hand made and decorated. The surface is shiny and unworn. Clear mark on the back and applied felt feet for use as a trivet.
During the 1920's building boom in California and other places constructing Spanish Revival architecture a high quality and reliable source of large quantities of tile couldn't be found locally but it was discovered that they could be found in Tunisia. When Santa Barbara was building its courthouse in the 1920's the architects used Tunisian tile, which sparked the expansion of the California tile industry.
