Franklin Tile

Viking Ship Tile by Franklin Salesman Sample

$ 895.00
This colorful art deco era tile was made at the Franklin Tile Company (1923-1935) in Lansdale PA. More of a glazed painting than a tile, it was made to hang on the wall, self-framed and with its embedded wire. The raised design is on a faience clay body. It depicts Viking ships at sea, intricately glazed in matte and glossy colors on a molded surface. During manufacture holes were incised into the tile in order to enable a wire to be inserted for hanging. The tile measures 8 7/8" square. It has an impressed mark on the back "Franklin Faience" and an ink stamp "SAMPLE." Expertly hand painted, this would have hung in a tile showroom to exhibit Franklin's quality and their colorfully glazed tiles.

The condition is nearly perfect, with only a couple of tiny nicks at the corners.
