Walter Crane Nursery Rhyme Tile, Jack and Jill
Walter Crane was an accomplished 19th century illustrator famous for his nursery rhyme book Baby's Opera, His designs were used by several American and English tile companies in the early 1900's. This tile has a transfer design with hand painted accents of Jack and Jill before Jack's unfortunate accident. Measures 6" x 6" x 1/2". This tile has an interesting application of the design. The surface has both glossy and matte glazes. The back is covered with cork so that it can be used as a trivet. If the cork was removed I bet it would have a mark for the American Encaustic Tile Company, AETCO, of Zanesville Ohio. The right edge has a few small flakes.
There are several different Walter Crane illustrations on tiles. Would be a great gift to start a collection or to add to one.
